The Turner Contemporary Gallery – Margate

The Turner Contemporary, a landmark new gallery designed by Stirling Prize Winner David Chipperfield Architects, opened in 2011. Inspired by JMW Turner’s sense of enquiry, it offers a space for people to embrace their curiosity and to discover different ways of seeing, thinking and learning.

Situated on Margate’s seafront, on the same site where Turner stayed when visiting the town, the gallery is the largest exhibition space in the South East, outside of London.

At its opening, John Kampfner, Chair of Turner Contemporary said: “The opening of Turner Contemporary marks the start of an extraordinary opportunity for Margate and Thanet to become one of the UK’s most compelling culture and tourism destinations. I would like to pay tribute to Kent County Council and our other partners for delivering this outstanding building on time and on budget.”

Marquee AV was commissioned to design, supply and install AV and video conferencing systems for the Turner Contemporary. This included Polycom video conferencing with PTZ motorized cameras and Panasonic wide screen projection. The audio for the room, which is required for multi-function use, also incorporated Kef and Martin Audio loudspeakers, Yamaha amplification and Audio-Technica microphones. The facility included full Crestron touch-screen control for flexibility and ease of use.

An infrastructure is built in to the Gallery spaces, allowing for audio, video and data feeds to and from the gallery, with connections to support a flexible range of use.

Marquee AV also provided the background music system for the venue’s café. To maintain the completely clean lines of the building’s interior design, Marquee used ‘invisible’ Amina ceiling loudspeakers, which are built in to the ceiling structure leaving nothing visible. These provide a very wide ambient coverage and are driven by Australian Monitor amplifiers.
